What’s Going to Happen to Parenthood?

March 6, 2013

Does anybody else out there watch Parenthood, Ron Howard’s “literary” comedy-drama that airs Tuesdays at 10:00 p.m. on NBC?

If not, I find myself wondering, why not?  Could it be because the network has relegated this quality program to a time slot that finds many of us, definitely our children, headed to bed at that time of night? I’m sure it’s not because Parenthood isn’t a cut above many of the shows on commercial TV today.

Parenthood, which aired on March 2, 2010, revolves around the Braverman family, patriarch Zeek Braverman, matriarch Camile Braverman and their extensive family—three generations that include two sons, two daughters, their spouses and a pack of grandchildren. Parenthood deals with what it means to be a family in today’s world, and it does so with maturity and restraint. Program topics include: single parenting, changing careers, rebellious teenagers, teen pregnancy, a child with Asperger syndrome, cancer, older-child adoption, stay-at-home fathers, and so much more. These episodes are great storytelling, well written, and could be viewed and discussed by parents and children together.

If only Parenthood aired at a decent hour.

As it is the airwaves between the hours of eight and nine are cluttered with programs filled with murder and mayhem, things not fit for young minds, in my humble opinion.  Things like: Criminal Minds, The Following (both about serial killers), Person of Interest, Elementary, CSI.

I’m not advocating censorship. I think people should watch what they want. In fact, I like Elementary and watch it every week. I’m just saying, why has NBC decided to put a family program like Parenthood on at a time when families can’t watch it, and then debate whether to cancel that program because of flagging ratings?

  • Hi Jo. I so agree with your statement: “As it is the airwaves between the hours of eight and nine are cluttered with programs filled with murder and mayhem, things not fit for young minds, in my humble opinion.” It takes writers and advocates like you to inspire change.

  • Margaret, I appreciate your taking the time to support my views on this issue. Perhaps NBC will get wind of this blog post and others like it and wise up. For now, rumor has it that Parenthood is being picked up for one more season.
