We’re headed west on I-80 across the Yolo Causeway with our new supply of brew. The night has turned calm and clear, and we’re driving with the windows down. The music is cranked up so we can hear it over the wind tunneling through the car. Lexi is driving the Camaro like she was born to it, her left arm propped on the open window frame and her right hand caressing the steering wheel as if it were a dove. She looks so pleased with herself, I can’t help but grin inside. I definitely made the right decision to let her drive my dad’s classic jalopy.

She’s telling the funniest story about this jerkosaurus her brother fixed her up with, and I start to laugh so hard, I swear I’m going to pee my pants.

“You’ve got to be kidding,” I say when she finally pauses. “No dude can be that dense.”

We’re both practically yelling over the noise, but neither of us suggests adjusting the volume on the music or rolling up the windows.

“I know, right?” She rolls her chestnut eyes. “It’s crazy. Anyway, I tell him to stick it back in his pants and take me home. But no. He just sits there with the dumbest look on his face. Then he says — and I swear to God I am not making this up — ‘Does this mean you won’t have sex with me?’ Jesus, I thought I would die. I wanted to scream, ‘Hey, douche bag! What part of NO do you not get?’ But I’m too much of a lady.”

“What a giant asshole,” I say through the laughter.

She nods. “Yeah. Well, he’s history, and so are blind dates. As God is my witness.” She holds up her can. “Hey, I’m empty.”

“Thought you couldn’t stand the stuff,” I tease and hand her another.

She takes a draw and looks in my direction. “What’s up with you and Adam?”

I usually tell Lexi everything. But I can’t tell her Adam and I had a big fight because he called me a drunk, in a manner of speaking.

What if she agrees with him?
